The musi vibe is a little confusiong at times to me. With the advent of the spoken word medium on top of rap, ultimately you will have a lot of cats saying a lot of something. I recognize the music because it’s been snatched of someone’s private song or it’s a new two chord wonder. I’m thinking if more cats learned how to play they would have less to say. .

The thing that hits me most is that we see so much poverty and inequality effecting the helpless,{children,elders} and we sing about it and call it a wrap. Amazing pr but it does nothing to resolve the issue at hand. Once we set the table, we must act. Use your energy and creativity to keep the light on the issues. Give something so much heat that folks must address something beyond the Grammy’s. I call it Harmonics in action. Vibrations force response. The law of physics and spiritual mathematics prove this. Use your skills and paint on a canvas,. Let’s do something beyond bowing and scraping and pointing to the other guy. It’s a fair trade off for our gifts.

Looking for the blind spot

I’m trying to shake off the sameness in the piece i’m working on. I can get the tune to pop for this project, however, I doesn’t strike that place where I haven’t been before.

I think an artist has to stay away from the commercial media long enough to get that inner ear back in tune. So much junk is coming in the head from the crap they call music that the pipes get filled with crud. Most of the music is formula. Its the same tasteless autotuned gunk that brims over your sense of balance. It’s like commercial jingles that numb you into submission.

Normally my answer is to get as far away from music and as close to nature as I physically can. It doesn’t have to be grand like some seaside resort. It can be a lake. All I think is needed is a natural rythym. Whatever the method, I’ve got to be at a place where the next note is something I had no idea I could play. It’s called art. Anything else is tracing.

gratitude in the attitude

If you are superior in attitude the gift of music will be short lived. Whatever the chosen discipline, there has to be an awareness that is really isn’t about you. Unless you can make the sun rise in the west instead of the east, you are just like anyone else. We’re here for a minute. Hopefully we give something back. Keep in mind that we serve the art, not the other way around. Keep it real. A little gratitude moves mountains. DH

Everyone has a gift

Don’t be stuck in the mode of trying to fit somebody’s paradigm. You may think you should aim to be like the next person but, you don’t. Clearly define what your goal is. Is it to be good? or famous? If it’s the fame then you need to see a shrink. Fame is an illusion. It’s the carrot dangling before the horse. It’s purely subjective. It’s not the end for everyone. However, you can control yourself and your qualities better than anyone else.

Have respect for your craft, be in love with the process. Keep in mind it’s the journey more than the destination that reflects you. If others feel you’re just average, nine times out of ten they live in their own mediocre realm. Try not to judge others based on some unrealistic scale. A scale created by the media or maybe relatives and friends. Do what you do. I believe the pressure comes when someone says “my child is gonna be a star”. Where have we heard that before?

I honestly believe the smallest of life still have a purpose. So if you have a like, love, passion or obsession, give it a go because it’s yours. DH

It’s a forever work in progress

I’m in the midst of the music making thing again. I refer to it as “thing” because of my love/hate relationship with the process. I call it a type of cleansing of the soul. I ‘m working o n the melodic features of the pieces initially. It brings me to the concept and usually i’m feeling loose. The heartbeat is the tempo. The pulse of it all. I visit this place most often. It is the woodshed of my artistic domain. I’ve got to do the reps. Life, the forever work in progress.

I’m embracing this wind in the spiritual sails deep down. I actually considered walking away. With the same old crap that this biz allows to thrive unfiltered, one could be jaded. However that being said , i couldn’t imagine walking off a battlefield without engaging the opposition. This time around I’ll just focus on the details of creating sound. The polytricks will have to be someone else’s job. It’s a must

I’ve had a very intense winter health wise. I believe I worked myself into exhaustion musically. Physically I had to endure extreme headaches with the problems of just trying to be still. I’ve never mastered this. Motion has always been my mantra. So let me just say here, thanks to my friends for checking on a brother. I’m due to get cleared to start working shortly. It’s time. I hope I still know how to play. DH

Art is my being

I’ve been a person always. I mean always involved with art. From fine arts to martial arts. It’s bee a somewhat unconcious road yet I can’t deny it’s true. I even did a lot of dance. True

It’s not a testimony as much as just a premise to express that I feel if art was more appreciated, that culture would eliminate this distorted sense of life. We treat others like shit. We ignore poverty if we can relegate it to something abstract or happening in some far off land. To humans who really count less than us. I swear our indifference and self congratulatory views have made us distant cousins .

Art it will be argued is subjective. That’s cool because this implies effect. This media is supposed to disturb the soul. Agitate and stimulate. We’ve somehow lost this in the mania of commercialism. Well not to dispair. Balance will be regained if only for a moment. Let art be your being. If not as a vocation then as a healing force you share with your private moments. It’s essential.

Production versus promotion

I find the landscape of this instant music phenom becoming more ridiculous and time consuming. I’m from the old school. You get with the producer, sketch out the music theme and line up, session with the engineers and turn it over to be cooked and gone.

Presently I have to then get the music uploaded to the distributors, and blast the net saying that I’ve finished a piece. Immediately it becomes yet another mp3 blast on some cloud and I get hit with someone making the same announcement regarding their work. It wears me completely out.

The creativity is drained by sheer overload of social posting and blurbs. The inevitable balancing act ensues. Choose to actually make decent music, or spend hours just talking about it. wow
